New pilot: SUTEE showcases digital agriculture at UPM’s experimental fields in Madrid city

On June 6, 2025, the SUTEE project carried out a hands-on pilot activity titled “Digital Technologies in Controlled Environments: Competences for the Future”, hosted at the experimental fields of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). The activity targeted both students and professionals in the field of agronomy, introducing them to the potential of IoT-enabled microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators for precision irrigation management.

At the heart of the workshop was a smart irrigation head designed to monitor and optimize water usage through real-time data collection and automated control. Participants explored how ESP32 microcontrollers, pressure and flow sensors, and electrovalves could be connected to cloud services and mobile interfaces to create intelligent irrigation systems. A Telegram-based control system was also presented, enabling alerts and remote commands.

🌱 Competence-Based Learning with SUTEEComp

Beyond its technical components, the activity was grounded in the SUTEEComp competence framework, which combines the European DigComp and GreenComp standards to support the development of digital and sustainability competences. Participants were invited to evaluate their experience using this framework, reflecting on their learning outcomes in areas such as creative problem-solving, digital collaboration, and environmental responsibility.

📊 A Diverse Audience and Positive Impact

The pilot brought together a diverse group of 30 participants from different professional backgrounds and age groups. Their feedback highlighted a strong interest in further exploring the integration of AI and automation in agriculture, particularly in relation to water and fertilizer optimization, disease detection, and real-time alerts.

This demonstrative activity underscored the value of merging digital innovation with sustainability goals in agricultural education. It also showed how the SUTEE project can inspire practical, competence-driven learning in both academic and professional settings.
