SUTEE visits Santiago Bernabéu to explore future educational pilots with Real Madrid

On June 26, 2025, members of the SUTEE project team from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid visited the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium to explore potential collaborations with Real Madrid on future educational pilots involving students.

The visit was attended by team members Bernardo Tabuenca, Carlos Gilarranz, and Vicente García, and also included representatives from the company Plantae (https://plantae.garden/) and the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Técnicos Agrícolas de Centro (https://www.agricolascentro.org/inicio), who had the opportunity to witness firsthand the technological marvel of the stadium’s underground turf management system, known as the Hipogeo.

This state-of-the-art facility, located beneath the pitch, is designed to protect and maintain the quality of the turf when not in use. The team was especially impressed by how the system carefully monitors and controls environmental variables such as CO2 enrichment, artificial lighting, humidity, and temperature. These measures ensure that the grass continues to grow optimally even while stored underground, showcasing an extraordinary example of smart environmental control in action.

The visit sparked exciting conversations about the educational potential of this environment. The SUTEE team discussed how these sophisticated monitoring and automation systems could serve as a real-world learning scenario for students interested in sustainability, smart technologies, and urban environmental challenges.

This first meeting laid the foundation for what could become a powerful collaboration, bringing together sports, education, and environmental innovation in a unique and inspiring setting. We look forward to the next steps in this promising partnership. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Real Madrid for the warm welcome and guided visit, and we are eager to explore future collaborations together.
