Welcome to SUTEE!
Showcasing Urban Trees for Environmental Education with
IoT Technology. SUTEE is an ERASMUS+ Strategic Cooperation Partnership in the field of school education project.
On October 2–3, 2025, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid hosted the II Congress on Teaching Innovation of Madrid Universities – MadrID, an event that brought together educators from across the region to share innovative practices in higher education. As part of the programme, Dr. Bernardo Tabuenca (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) presented a full paper highlighting one of the SUTEE pilot experiences conducted in the Mobile App Development course.
The presentation, titled “Play, Code, and Transform: Environmental Education with Dice and Mobile Applications,” showcased how project-based learning and digital tools can be combined to promote sustainability competencies in higher education. The pilot was carried out with 4th-year students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, using a methodology aligned with the goals of the SUTEE project: fostering environmental awareness in urban contexts through the use of IoT and mobile technologies.
In the pilot, students first explored urban environmental topics using the “Climate Story Cubes,” a storytelling tool that randomly combines environmental challenges, impacted entities (humans, plants, animals), and possible solutions. These narratives served as the basis for the design and development of educational mobile applications, coded using Kotlin and Dart. Students worked in teams, combining data from IoT sensors with their own app ideas to address real-world environmental problems.

This experience highlights the potential of merging environmental and digital education in higher education settings—one of SUTEE’s core ambitions. Congratulations to all students and instructors involved!
