SUTEE Project initiation

The SUTEE – Showcasing Urban Trees for Environmental Education with IoT Technology project is ready to start implementing the foreseen project activities. The project aims at educating teachers and young people in the importance of the environmental fabric of dense metropolitan areas, both for human well-being and when addressing climate change. Since urban areas are particularly affected, the project tries to bring educational innovation to reacting to this societal and ecological challenge. The project will combine suitable ambient technologies (sensors, IoT) with inquiry-based pedagogy in search for a wider democratic involvement.

The project will generate accessible information technologies that present and share data on urban environments (e.g. tree canopy, heat islands). These will be combined with learning activities to create innovative learning designs that support digital and environmental competences. Through a cascading approach, teachers and schools will receive training, tools, and designs to implement eco-aware urban information strategies. Online open learning activities will support practical implementation.

Utilisation of siloed governmental environmental data for educational purposes will be enabled via a smartphone app and other channels. It will be enhanced with citizen science data collections from school classes in urban surroundings, which can provide a fuller picture of the status of the natural environment in cities. Bringing together technology, ecology and human learners in teaching and training activities will result in a future-oriented environmental awareness and responsible behaviour.
