During a three-day intensive workshop managed by the SUTEE project, participants from four European cities explored the possibilities of environmental learning activities. The workshop\u2019s target audience encompassed primary and secondary teacher from schools in Vienna, Athens, Madrid, and Frankfurt. Additionally, lecturers from university and some of their students also took part in the workshop.<\/p>

After a brief introduction to the SUTEE competence framework, which merges the European digital competence and green frameworks, the teachers engaged in some hands-on activities that were aimed at inspiring their learning designs.<\/p>

One of the easier activities, suited for primary education, was to measure the circumference of trees. This is generally achieved one meter above the ground. Our teachers used different ways to come to a measurement, utilising a tape measure, wooly string, and sticky tape.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The teachers learned that all public trees in Vienna are registered in an open database, which can be viewed on a map. Every tree has a unique number that can be searched in the register. This then provides a range of information about that particular tree, such as the year it was planted, the species, the height and circumference, as well as the diameter of the crown. The latter is important for the size of shade it produces.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Participants enjoyed the activities and found them inspiring, especially in the combination of traditional instruments like a tape measure and digital information provided from open access databases.
